Neurostrength Consulting Founder's Corner

Hello! I am Katie Green. I work with business owners and c-suite executives to create, implement, and sustain policies that will empower their neurodivergent workforce. In this case, neurodivergent refers to autistic women, women with ADHD/ADD, learning differences, and sensory needs.

Did you know many neurodivergent adults are underemployed or unemployed because of a variety challenges related to self-regulation and life management? The neuordivergent adults that are employed and compensated commiserate with their skills, passions, and education fall into three categories

(1) they are extremely vocal about having superpowers

(2) refuse any labels because they don't see it as limiting

(3) stay quiet and don't disclose due to the ambiguity related to seeing this as a disability

A company culture can have approach this as a "don't ask don't tell" situation and some just leave accommodations for people with learning disabilities. The reality is, there are thousands of employees are still neurodivergent without learning disabilities that need workplace support.

A challenge is that neurodiversity has only culturally solidified in the last ten years and adults are getting diagnosed in their thirties after completing education.

they don't have the clarity of having names for their experiences? In addition, many have experienced trauma on top of a neurodivergent reality.

My Story

For the past 10 years I have been on the path to clinical licensure as a licensed psychologist. Educationally I have a Bachelor's in Human Development and Psychology, Masters in Forensic Psychology, and an addiction certification. Currently, I am Doctoral Candidate, finishing off a PsyD in Psychology. I got to the point of collecting supervision hours for licensure and my course got corrected in a way that honors how my brain works when I switched to coaching and consulting. After spending internships in case management, volunteering with several nonprofits in homeless services, trying a semester of social work, and being an addiction counselor through a global pandemic I knew I was headed for a life out of sync with my values.

After seeing my addiction clients make significant personal momentum in sessions then return to places and people that kept them in cycles of sickness I understood the most effective support for them was needed outside the four walls of therapy. Through my time as an addiction counselor I became certified in ASAM Levels 1 and 2 which allowed me specific training on administering the Bio Psycho Social Assessment to clients. This equipped me with the skillset needed to make appropriate recommendations for level of care placement and coordinate referrals. The American Society of Addiction Medicine provides national guidelines for assessment and treatment standards for all credentialed substance abuse professionals. Considering my extensive education in psychology I quickly identified the addiction clients were also dealing with undiagnosed and untreated mental health issues and trauma.

Creating Neurostrength Consulting allowed me to build a platform for business leaders and executives to peel back the curtain and understand how neurodivergent employees can thrive in the workplace with the right structures, systems, and supports in place. The employees with the most issues related to their performance or workplace behaviors are the only ones needing help. Thousands of neurodivergent adults go into work, do their work with excellence but mentally fall apart after the work day due to the social dynamics and unspoken workplace norms at play that are not necessarily explained transitioning from school to adult life.

My Focus For You

Having lived as an Autistic woman with late diagnosis I fully understand how heightened competence overshadows support needs. As long as my work was done correctly, the social emotional realities were simply left behind because I couldn't create sentences to describe my experiences or what I needed. The consequences? Medical burnout that's taken me quite a bit of intentionality and therapy to move through. It is difficult to move through the world not knowing how to embrace the way our brains work and not having any frame of reference for how to go forward.

As a mental health consultant specializing in empowering business owners and c-suite executives to create a workplace that includes, empowers, and celebrates all neurotypes, I confidently support them with the Fractional 5 Approach that I have implemented in my own life. If you would like to discuss how your business can become a place where all neurotypes find community, support, and resources to thrive at work, please reach out by emailing me at [email protected].
